Just switched on our Magnet DSL line. Hope everything goes well...

We have Magnet here, uncontended 12Mb down/1Bm up. Seems to give
those speeds on a speedtest also.
Only downer was that we're on an unbundled Eircom line and it
took two weeks to get restored after a fault in the exchange due to
the various entities involved for different parts of the
connection.
We use it as a backup DSL feed to a contended 12Mb eircom
line.
When you split a line, you're going to reduce its upstream
speed. When you go around splitting lines instead of wiring them,
it's only natural to offer the market ADSL instead of real DSL.
@evertb It cost the same
as our 6Mb used to, just under 200 a month for each line. For a
company of 50 people it is one of our lowest charges for
communications with potentially the most savings.
@evertb Magnet offered a
synchronous 2Mb link but it costs a lot more > 400/month I
think, using a wireless link of some type.
@topgold I've kept the
both lines up for the redundancy but the extended downtime on the
magnet line has meant it will always have to be the secondary. I
route http(s) traffic over it and can switch lines easily if there
is an issue.
@Evertb: Very nice on
large downloads. Doesn't change browsing experience much as depends
on the feed and browser, etc.. but podcasts come down nice and
zippy.

I would say that cost a fair penny.....

The multiple-player scenario is the only reason I have stayed with Eircom. When something goes wrong, all the players blame each other.

I just do not understand why a lot of broadband services are not synchronous...

@Evertb: me too!

@topgold True, but it's not a technical limitation just one imposed by shoddy business practice..

Some refer to eircom's line architecture as "legacy infrastructure" that comes hand-in-glove with "shoddy business practise."

@dbannon So that's 6mb up 1 down uncontented for 200 p/m? Not bad...

@Evertb: Nope, 12 down, 1 up.

@dbannon That's even better...

@dbannon Obviously, how much faster can a site download before the human eye can't notice the millisecond difference...

Typical - when I speedtest the magnet line I'm only getting 6mb down today. Must check again later.
